Y Galeri was initially established as a contemporary gallery in 2012 on Caerphilly’s St Fagans Street and run as a limited company with a board of six directors. When the three year lease expired it was quite fortuitous that premises within the Visit Caerphilly Centre became available. Being in the heart of the town with stunning views of the impressive Castle this was an ideal location. The new gallery opened on 17th April 2015.
No longer operating as a limited company, Y Galeri Caerffili is now run by two of the former directors Jan Pennell in partnership with husband Gareth. Together they make a good team, each having complementary skills, strengths and important roles to play. Their ethos is to support Welsh artists and Welsh makers and by providing a platform to showcase the extensive wealth of Welsh talent they aim to put Y Galeri and Caerphilly on the map.
Jan previously ran the art gallery at Rhondda Heritage Park for 14 years, and was fortunate enough to have worked with some of Wales’ well known and respected artists including Brendan Stuart Burns, Iwan Bala, Valerie Ganz, James Donovan and Osi Rhys Osmond who have all shown their support by exhibiting in the Caerphilly gallery since its inception.
The exhibition space is supported by a range of exclusive and handcrafted contemporary arts and crafts ideas such as jewellery, ceramics, glass, wood and textiles from a variety of talented Welsh makers.
